Starbucks WiFi

Rumor has it that Starbucks is going to offer free WiFi starting July 1st. They have had WiFi for the last several years but were locked into a contract with T-Mobile who managed the service. At that time only the first 24 hrs were free, then you needed an account with T-Mobile ($$$) to connect. Other coffee houses offered free WiFi so this is great for Starbucks and many coffee addicts who also want an internet fix.

Breaking News

I have dedicated nearly 22 years to a library that has been named the #1 library in the country and is now an ALA 5 Star library. On April 3rd the doors will close on 12 (50%) of the branches in our system and 148 of our finest will no longer have jobs. This is a sad truth all over the US. In many cities as the tax revenues decrease and the cost of government operations increase, libraries suffer, security suffers, and education suffers.

In our digital age, libraries offer the sole means of closing digital divides between the haves and have nots. As employees become the unemployed the reliance on libraries as a means of learning computer skills, creating a resume, searching for jobs, applying for jobs, and in some cases finding a job.

I invite any who are able to support your local library. Lobby for your government to prepare for the future and if they are not already effected to plan to weather the storm of the current recession.

eMac upgrade update

Well, 4 of the 5 eMacs are upgraded to Leopard. Yes, they run it just fine after a memory upgrade to 1GB. I also stocked one with Open Source Software to test out. I will be recruiting teens and youth to help out with testing and getting opinions as to what works and what doesn't. So far TuxPaint has been used a lot.

Apple and bundled software:
Leopard
iLife 09 - iMovie did not upgrade due to Video Card.
iWork 09 - Apple Office Suite
The old Panther build came bundled with a couple games that I left in place as they were very popular:
Nanosaur 2
Marble Blast Gold
I also allowed access to:
Dictionary, with profanity blocked
Chess
TextEdit
Caculator

I also kept PrintShop for a desktop publishing software.

Open Source installed:
For pre-teens:
Child's Play
TuxPaint
TuxMath
TuxType
For Teens:
Celestia
Stellarium
GIMP
Inkscape
Blender
KompoZer
Scratch
SketchUp

I am still trying to load Alice. I have it on my MacBook and it runs great. The website says that it will run on a PPC Mac but when I try to install it comes up as not recognized. I am still researching this but if any of my readers know what the problem might be let me know in comments, especially if you can help me resolve the issue.

Photo social bookmarks

I'm not 100% sure why Digg or another social bookmarking site can't do this but I found this on iLibrarian and had to post a link to it. Basically the New York Times had an article about some sites that do for images what Digg and the rest do for websites. It's worth checking out.

I need a new marketing strategy

Teens don't care about Open Source. I will be attempting my GIMP class again but am marketing it as just a photo editing class. Hopefully, that will draw in more people.
